Tobacco control for global health is about putting tobacco control at the heart of health and development.

Tobacco use is the one risk factor common to the major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes. NCDs kill 35 million people yearly, of which 80 per cent are in low and middle income countries.

TAKE ACTION

The UN agreed with FCA and the NCD Alliance to create a civil society taskforce for its NCD summit.

However, our work is not complete and FCA is again calling on the heads of government, yet this time to appoint an NCD champion to work with the taskforce.

Please help us pressure heads of government by sending a letter too.

During the United Nation’s (UN) summit on NCDs during 19-12 September 2011, FCA and its partners will advocate the important role that tobacco control can play in development.

FCA aims for the summit’s outcomes statement to include specific commitments to rapid and effective Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) implementation – recognising that it provides the framework for international cooperation.

Thanks to FCA pressure, along with the NCD Alliance, on heads of government the UN will create a summit civil society taskforce.

However, this victory is not complete and FCA is again calling on the heads of government, yet this time to appoint an NCD champion to work with the taskforce.

Please help us pressure your head of government by sending a letter too.

You can download a copy of the letter and more information here.
