Jakarta, VIVA – Various industry players in the affected sectors began to protest against the Draft Regulation of the Minister of Health (Randah Permenkes), related to the Safety of Tobacco Products and Electronic Cigarettes that are being discussed by the Ministry of Health.
One of them is the Indonesian Video Streaming Association (AVISI), which strongly rejects the discriminatory rules to be passed. The reason is, the derivative rule from Government Regulation (PP) Number 28 of 2024 mandates a plan to ban the display of content, which displays tobacco products and electronic cigarettes in print media, broadcasting media, and information technology media including streaming services.
“The plan to ban the display of the content has the potential to have a negative impact not only on the video streaming industry, but also on the national film industry as a whole,” said the AVISI management as quoted from the official statement, Friday, October 4, 2024.
If the content ban plan is implemented, then there will be no more content, film titles, and series that display or relate to tobacco products or electronic cigarettes.
Whereas in practice, AVISI highlights that there are already many Indonesian films, series, and artworks, such as Gadis Kretek, which have received global recognition. But unfortunately, works like this will be threatened to be banned from airing and circulating in their own country.
“This is very counterproductive in the midst of the government’s efforts to increase the value of investment, develop the creative economy, and encourage the national film industry to be able to develop and go international,” he said.
