A plan to implement smoke-free activities in tourist destinations frequented by domestic and international travellers is under discussion, according to the Chairman of the Public Health Foundation.
Discussions are underway with ministries and organizations related to tourist destinations and involved in implementing these activities.
“The aim is to create smoke-free areas in tourist destinations frequented by domestic and foreign travellers. Additionally, we will establish other smoke-free areas in places related to tourist destinations, such as universities, basic education schools, airports, ports, and passenger vehicles. The more smoke-free areas we establish, the better we can prevent diseases caused by smoking,” said Chairman Dr Than Sein of the Public Health Foundation.
The Public Health Foundation has also established smoke-free areas at approximately 120 pagodas in the Bagan ancient cultural area in Mandalay Region as part of its efforts to establish smoke-free zones nationwide.
Among the smoke-free areas in Myanmar, the Bagan Ancient Cultural Heritage Zone, together with Saensuk Municipality in Thailand, won the bronze medal for the ASEAN Smoke-Free Award in August 2023. — ASH/MKKS
