A training course to raise public awareness on smoking prevention for 30 members of southern media organisations was held in Vung Tau city of southern coastal Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on September 9.

Experts from the World Health Organistion (WHO) and the Ministry of Health talked about the harmful effects caused by active and passive smoking.

They also updated attendees on the current situation of tobacco use in Vietnam and in the world as well as the country’s efforts in smoking prevention.

Trainees were introduced to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Vietnamese government’s plan on implementation of the FCTC.

From now to 2010, Vietnam will increase its tobacco tax and sale prices, restrict smoking at offices and public places and publicise the harmful contents and substances in cigarette smoke as part of its efforts to implement the FCTC.
