About a week ago, a radio reporter’s 1 day workshop was held at Vientiane Capital. Radio reporters, commentators and broadcasters from 8 provinces of Lao PDR participated. They learned about the WHO FCTC, specifically its key articles via the M-POWER, Tobacco Control(TC) Laws in Laos, and Lao Tobacco Control updates. There were also discussions what their roles can be, and how to help.
They were divided into 5 groups, and had group discussions on possible topics for advocacy. They had exercises on how to write a radio script, and presented it as a real broadcast.
An awards ceremony was also held for those who have been actively participating in TC work and have enforced smoke-free laws for the past years. Awardees were: Lao Star TV Channel, Vientiane Times Newspaper, Vientiane Mai Newspaper, National Radio Station, Hygiene and Prevention department, Ministry of Health(MOH), Medical Information Center Ministry of Health, Mass Media Department Ministry of Information-Culture and Tourism, Settha Palace Hotel, and the Wat Pa Tatthong temple.
The ceremony was presided by Dr. Nao Boutta, Director Cabinet of MOH on behalf of the Inter-ministerial Tobacco Control Task Force.
