Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau said during an anti-smoking campaign Sunday that increasing the tobacco tax is critical to help citizens quit smoking.
In his opening speech, Lo stated that smoking affects not only the smoker but also the health of others exposed to secondhand smoke.
He said as 9.5 percent of people in the city are still smoking, there is a sizable distance compared to the target government aims to lower to 7.8 percent by 2025.
Lo added that there has been an increase in female smokers and urged them not to be attracted by flavored tobacco products.
