Vietnam is facing an “epidemic” of new tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, with a significant increase in use among young people.

The Innova Connect workshop highlighted the need to develop a comprehensive and immediate response strategy to control this situation. Research shows that 14% of students have ever used e-cigarettes and 7% have used them in the past 30 days, with many young people still mistakenly believing that these products are safer than traditional cigarettes.

Experts warn that the tobacco industry is using sophisticated advertising to attract young people and create a new generation addicted to nicotine. Some countries have imposed complete bans on new tobacco products in order to protect the health of future generations.

To cope, it is necessary to develop and enforce strict control policies as well as strengthen public awareness campaigns on the harmful effects of new tobacco products.
