Cambodians will stop buying cigarettes if priced more than US$ 2.50

22 May 2018, Phnom Penh: Our partners in Cambodia launched the results of the Youth Opinion Survey on Cigarette Prices which reveals that Cambodians will stop buying cigarettes if price is more than US$2.50 per pack. The main purpose of the study is to find out what young Cambodians think of current cigarette (and smokeless tobacco and ENDS) prices and their perception toward higher taxes and prices on these products. Ultimately, the aim of the study is to get evidence that can be used to advocate for higher taxes on tobacco products to protect especially the young people.

This SEATCA-supported study was conducted by the General Department of Taxation, Ministry of Economy and Finance – Cambodia and the Psychology Department of the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Four other countries are currently doing the survey with support from SEATCA. A regional report will be released soon.

SEATCA worked with the Center for Health Economics and Policy Studies (CHEPS), University of Indonesia to design the research and train country researchers.
